Why do I need dental x-rays?
Dental x-rays are an important diagnostic tool. They have been used safely for years to diagnose such problems as cavities, bone and gum disease, and even tumors that couldn’t otherwise be identified. Regarding the safety of x-rays in general, it’s important to realize that you are constantly exposed to some level of radiation from sources like the sun, minerals in soil, and even your microwave.
At Brazos Dental Associates, we do not use traditional x-rays. Instead, we use state-of-the-art digital radiography. This updated version gives us finely detailed images of your teeth that help direct us us about making important decisions about your dental care. We prefer to use digital x-rays because they reduce your exposure, eliminate the need for traditional films, and are safer for the environment.
How often we take x-rays depends on your dental history and current condition. For some patients, it may be necessary to take x-rays twice a year. Some patients who see us regularly and don't have a history of chronic oral health problems and gum disease may only need x-rays every few years. If you're a new patient to our practice, we may take digital x-rays as part of your first exam for a baseline that will allow us to monitor changes to your oral health in the future.
Your safety and comfort are very important to us, and you are always welcome to talk to us about your concerns. Please contact us if you have questions or would like to schedule your next dental exam and cleaning.
